Dear Friend,

Since Emerge Massachusetts launched in 2008, we have trained 155 women to run for office, with 15 women currently running for office this year. We have women serving both in local and state level government. We have implemented an innovative bootcamp training for current candidates, expanded our donor base, and garnered state-wide recognition.

it is important to consider how we can make it the new normal to have mothers like Michelle serving in office. As a society, we can't afford NOT to have them at the decision-making table. So this Mother's Day, I want you to reach out to a mother you know--maybe your own--and encourage her to run for office. Maybe she'll say no, but maybe she's just waiting for someone to ask her. By Andrea Dew Steele, President and Founder of Emerge America.

On behalf of the Barbara Lee Family Foundation, Lake Research Partners recently conducted a poll among 1000 likely voters in key states, with an oversample of 200 young women (age 18-35)* voters, which is the first in-depth look at younger women responding to messages about women candidates. Designed to examine voters’ attitudes toward women candidates and elected officials on both sides of party lines, this poll explores whether voters agree with the President and their beliefs about the disparities in leadership between women and men.

We are thrilled to have more Emerge women on the ballot than ever before. But we have plenty of work ahead of us. In fact, we are recruiting our next class of candidates right now.

We are thrilled to announce an expansion of our training program, starting in 2014!

For our candidates, this means more options and a greater level of support. It means women can rely on Emerge to be there throughout different points in their careers. It means that when we discover a talented female candidate, we invest in her and stick with her until she gets over that finish line.

Today we celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which recognizes women’s right to vote.  Both my grandmothers were born before women had the right to vote, and I think of them often as I run for Massachusetts State Senate.  I wear my Grandma Dolan’s perfume, Tabu, on the campaign trail to keep her with me, and it feels wonderful to know how proud both she and Memar would be of their granddaughter.  We’ve come a very long way.

We are halfway through our Emerge training here in Massachusetts and I have to confess, it’s what is not taught in the curriculum that has impacted me most.

I don’t remember any of our trainers directly speaking to this issue. Nowhere is it clearly defined on the website, and I am absolutely positive we don’t have any handouts on how it works. But I am beginning to get it.
